Zodiacs, Shackleton and Penguins

Today we got to go out on the Zodiac boats to explore Elephant Island more closely. In particular, we road right up to the spot where Ernest Shackleton left 22 of his seaman for over four months as he made his way to South Georgia Island. This monument is where his 22 seaman lived. It was very small. We can't imagine living there for 4 months. As you can see, there were many, many penguins. We stopped counting at 1,000. Oh and our advice to you is not to be downwind from a penguin rookery . . . very smelly!!
Today's weather was beautiful and as such we did not need to where much of our warm clothes to go out on the Zodiac.

Dallas, Anna and girls. Thanks for sharing the photos and play by play. I have read Endurance about Shackleton's exploration. What an incredible book, but made more so for you to think about what 2 years on the ice floes means now that you are there.

You can never tell us too much about what you are seeing. Nice boat in the background. You better hope that glacier doesn't calve.

Hello Courtney, Abby, Lala and Camille.

Wow, what an adventure so far! We've been checking in to your blog everyday to catch the view through the eyes of the Clement's.

Now you've shared the sights, but what sounds are you experiencing? Can you hear the whales singing? Does a penguin really sound like a new born baby crying? When you wake up in the morning can you hear the ships engines churning or can you hear waves and ice crashing against the boat? Does the captain have any interesting music on deck??

Let me know. g
